“The best company usually wins — not the ones with the best product. But we have the best product and are by far the best company in our space. I've been in software for two decades and this is only the second time I can say that.”
"Crash" claims to have come by his nickname as a rodeo clown (like Crash Cooper, with perhaps a QA manager as the bull?) but he's much more fun and versatile than that. He's currently our Enablement Team lead, does some systems work, and can even fix the Keurig office coffee machine on occasion!
Getting to know Crash:
Q: What do you remember best about your schooling?
A: I'm a local boy, and attended St. Polycarp Elementary School in Somerville and St. Clements High School in Medford, and learned Latin, which I no longer speak for many reasons. At WIT, I learned that software works best when it controls some sort of hardware. A buddy from college went on to create an artillery shell that was software-guided via GPS; I, on the other hand, wrote video games. He was so ashamed of me that he didn't speak to me for two years.
Q: What do you love to do outside of work?
A: When you have kids, the closest you get to adult literature is Froggy's First Kiss. I'd like to do more sleeping; this is ahead of my love of eating, which in turn is ahead of handing my kids to their grandparents!
Q: What's the coolest thing you've done at Tamale?
A: My current task is the creation of a relational security model from which all our systems will operate. I really enjoy my work: coding, working with other engineers, the QA staff, the business managers, and drinking coffee (the CTO says I am gifted at the last one).
Q: What do you tell friends and family you do at Tamale?
A: I tell them I write software for the financial industry. They are related in that on occasion, both software and financial markets will crash. But in the long run, both are of primary importance in the 21st century in the way oil was important in the 20th. Being in one important industry of this century is great; being in both is awesome.
Q: What is your favorite thing about our customers?
A: The customers in the financial industry are the best customers on the planet from a software / high-tech vantage point. They appreciate the primary importance of software in their day-to-day work lives, and for their industry as a whole. They are demanding but rewarding, and the problem space is excellent in that it is vast and challenging. Outside of working on a Mars probe for NASA, I can't think of a better problem space.
